Why First Wausau?

If you are looking for a community of faith where questions are welcome, honesty is expected, children can wiggle and giggle, and joy is multiplied, you will fit in well at First Wausau! We are Wausau’s first and oldest congregation, and for over 175 years we have worked to bridge the past, present, and future to connect more people with each other and God’s love in Christ. 

As a United Methodist congregation, we live by three historic rules: Do no harm, Do good, and Stay in love with God. Our faith is grounded in Scripture, interpreted by tradition, reason, and experience, and flourishes as we put our beliefs into loving action. Our local church is especially known for serving the downtown (and beyond!) and our inspiring worship and music. We are a community for all, and welcome people of all ages, nations, races, abilities, identities, and you!

Why Pray?

Prayer is the place to begin and grow a life of spiritual meaning and adventure. Sometimes we receive the answers we hope for, and other times God knows we need to develop patience and perseverance. God’s often unexpected ways of fulfilling our soul’s longings remind us that God’s ways are better and higher than ours. Most of all, praying helps develop a more loving, trusting, and joyful relationship with God. As we pray, we will be more open to hearing that “still, small voice” in our souls that guides and strengthens us, comforts us in pain, and opens doors to new opportunities. Why Worship?

Gathering to sing old songs, hear ancient stories and lessons, and give praise, prayers, and offerings can seem like an out-of-date ritual. However, our weekly presence together in God’s presence gives breadth and depth to faith. We worship because God designed worship as the primary way to stay grounded, connected, and growing in our understanding and love for God and each other. Through the mystery of Communion and covenant of Baptism, we celebrate God’s grace and presence to all people.  We welcome all people of all beliefs and backgrounds to worship with us!

Why Faith Formation?

We are grateful for the variety of spiritual questions, experiences, education, and insights that people have. As we share these gifts with each other, we all learn and grow. Because we each have limited understanding, we begin on the foundation of Scripture, found in the Old and New Testaments. Whether through a Sunday morning class, a confirmation or new member class, a mid-week small group, or a week/end at camp, our faith is formed into a strong yet flexible heart of love.  Consider Faith Formation to be a gift for yourself and of yourself!

Why Serve?

Faith and Service are like two wings on a bird – both are needed to spiritually fly and soar! Authentic faith always leads us to reach out to lift others who need an empowering hand and signs of God’s grace. As we live up to our name First Wausau, we offer many opportunities to serve our community. In addition, we recognize everyone throughout the world as being our neighbors, and we work compassionately to alleviate suffering, resist oppression, and ensure justice. We invite you to experience a sense of purpose and fulfillment as we serve together!
